GDP to recover faster under Congress: Manmohan Singh

India's economy will recover at a faster pace if the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is elected to form the next government, Prime Miniter Dr. Manmohan Singh was quoted as saying. The Congress needs to be voted back because the country needs a government that understands how the Indian economy functions and how the global economy functions, and is capable of taking bold decisions, he said.

According to reports, the UPA took steps that helped to insulate the economy from the impact of the global crisis, the Prime Minister said. The Government indicated in the interim budget that additional stimulus measures would be taken when the full budget is presented, he added.

The Prime Minister has sought renewed mandate for the UPA on the strength of his track record since the 1970s when Indira Gandhi sought his advice in the wake of the 1973 oil-shock and later the 1990-91 economic crisis, when India had to mortgage gold. "India was one country that was saved from the hyper-inflation of 1970s. When I took charge in June 1991 as the Finance Minister, we said we willl turn the economy around in one year. We did that,” he said.
