Govt to borrow Rs 46,000 cr more from market

The government will borrow an additional Rs 46,000 crore between February 20 and March 20 to overcome the stress on government finances due to lower revenue collections and higher spending. The current fiscal year ends on March 31.

"We had discussions with the Reserve Bank of India. The borrowing will be between February 20 and March 20 to the order of Rs 46,000 crore," Economic Affairs Secretary Ashok Chawla told reporters.

He said the extra borrowing would be done in four tranches. The central bank will carry out the government's extra borrowing programme in a non-disruptive manner, RBI Deputy Governor Shyamala Gopinath said.

"We will ensure borrowing is carried out in a non-disruptive manner," Gopinath said.
